When working with mordants & modifiers use well ventilated area and face mask.
Warning! Iron is very contaminating in the dye studio so the utmost of care and attention should be used when using iron. Many dyers keep seperate buckets and instruments solely for use with iron. Once you have used iron with any equipment wash it thoroughly with soap and water as the slightest speck can impact on the next project you work on.
Having said that iron is a wonderful thing mineral to explore.
Used as a mordant both pre and post dyeing with each procedure resulting in varying effects. It will deepen or sadden colours, move pinks to purples, cutch browns to luscious chocolate browns and yellows to greens. It will also improve light and wash fastness. Best used on cellulose fibres, on proteins fibres great caution should be observed as it can make protein fibres very brittle and hasten fibre breakdown.
Use only 2 -4% WOF and watch when in bath as sometimes it can react very quickly - minutes! Not that you would have to but never leave longer than 25 - 30 mins.
