Our handloomed Khadi comes directly from the weaving houses of India.

The handle of the cloth when you receive it is in original condition from the weaver, therefore, it may have a coating of rice paste, used to make handling the finer yarns easier, along with the natural pectins and waxes naturally derived in the cotton fibre.

Prior to dyeing it is these pectins, waxes and pastes that need to be removed by the process of scouring to highlight the qualities unique to handloom and Khadi. There may be a small amount of shrinkage after scouring, if it is significant we will mention this in the individual cloth description.

In any preparation of cloth for dyeing scouring is required for quality results.

If you have no intention to dye with our handloom or Khadi we recommend putting it through the hottest machine wash with 5g of washing soda per 100g fibre and a dash of mild dishwashing liquid. Add cloth to washing machine, fill machine with hot water, add dissolved washing soda and detergent, allow it to agitate for a few minutes to wet out the cloth then hit pause for an hour or two, then unpause and allow the full washing cycle to complete.

The colour the water turns is not due to dirt, it is the pectins and waxes from the cotton. You can see from our image just how the water colour changes through this process and once you have completed scouring you will be able to feel the difference in your handloom and Khadi. The pectins and waxes naturally occur in cotton fibre primarily as a protectant from moisture absorption on the plant. For successful dyeing these need to be removed to create a more absorbent atmosphere to work on.

We could scour our handloom and Khadi prior to offering for sale, this would not only increase the cost but it would deny our customers an insight into the true nature of the fibre they are working with. One of our primary intentions is to educate and connect people with the wonders of working with natural fibre and natural dye. We want you to experience as much of the process as possible and empower you with knowledge.
